College Laptop Initiative
The Student Laptop Initiative requires incoming Pharm.D. students to purchase laptops for convenient, portable, and flexible access to the variety of learning resources available at WSU and on the World Wide Web. Pharmacy education and pharmacy practice in the 21st century will critically depend on graduates who have mastery of information technology. Minimum Requirements for laptop purchases
Processor:: 1.8GHz+ Single Core or 1.6GHz+ dual core
RAM: 2GB+ recommended
Hard Drive: 80GB (or larger)
Optical: CD-R/RW or DVD+/-RW
Network: 802.11b/g and 10/100 wired ethernet
OS: Windows XP, Vista or Mac OS X 10.4+
Office**: Microsoft Office 2003/2008 Professional, Mac Office 2004/ 2008
Antivirus: Available free for Students. Contact Pharmacy IS for assistance.
** WSU Students can purchase Office at a discounted rate through the E-Academy at WSU.
Optional:
- USB Flash Drive for moving and sharing files
- External Hard drive for backing up laptop.
- PDAs / Cell Phones
PDAs/Cell Phones
Some students elect to purchase a PDA or Cell Phone in addition to a laptop. When purchasing a PDA/Cell Phone please read the specifications carefully. Some PDAs/Cell Phones are wireless capable but do not include a wireless adapter. Wireless capable PDAs require you to purchase a wireless add on card.
Several applications are available to students through the Pharmacy website. Clinical Pharmacology, Micromedex, Epocrates, and Merck Medicus. Some of these applications are also available for use on PDAs/Cell Phones. Please read the requirements before purchasing a PDA or Cell Phone. Some of these applications do not support "Smart Phones" or the iPhone.

Backing up your laptop
It is important that you back up your computer on a regular basis. It is recommended that you back up your computer to DVDs, external hard drives or online backup storage to protect computer from any data loss. There are several online backup solutions available at no or minimal cost.
