WSU COMMUNITY PHARMACY RESIDENCY
JONES PHARMACY, SPOKANE

Jones Pharmacy and Home Health Care Center currently occupies 8,800 square feet of sales floor space. The business provides a multi-faceted retail establishment that includes durable medical equipment, retail merchandising (gifts, cards, variety items) and contract centers that include an in-store U.S. Postal Service station, UPS pick-up, and payment center for AT&T Broadband. Jones also provides an array of pharmacy services such as specialty medication packaging for assisted living facilities, enteral nutrition products, manual/electric breast pumps and supplies, ostomy and catheter supplies, and stocks hard to find prescription items. Providing exceptional customer service is one of Jones Pharmacy’s priorities. Due to this commitment, the pharmacy was awarded the Spokane Pharmacy Association’s “2002 Pharmacy Appreciation Award.”

Jones pharmacists have always been committed to promoting the pharmacy profession through mentoring aspiring pharmacists and encouraging and supporting existing practitioners. Pharmacists at Jones have also strived to develop and implement innovative services to better serve patients. Smoking cessation, diabetes self-management, wellness education, specialty compounding, and lipid management are examples of some of the programs that are offered in the Spokane community pharmacy. In addition, pharmacists at Jones currently practice with prescriptive authority for vaccinations, emergency contraception, and rapid strep throat testing.

The Jones Pharmacy residency program provides new pharmacists with the flexibility, time, resources, and support needed to develop innovative pharmacist care activities. In addition, the program allows pharmacists to strengthen their management knowledge and skills. Residents are also encouraged to pursue practice areas that they find interesting and build upon clinical knowledge and skills. This residency program will offer the pharmacist a unique opportunity to learn and practice contemporary, entrepreneurial pharmacy in the community setting.

Jones Pharmacy preceptors include W.D. Evans, owner, Linda Garrelts MacLean, R.Ph, CDE, Catrina Schwartz, Pharm.D.

W. D. Evans has been involved in all phases in community pharmacy management. He worked with a Northwest chain of pharmacies for 12 years in many capacities, which included new store development, operations, personnel management, and store management. Before purchasing Jones Pharmacy in Spokane in January 2002, Mr. Evans served as the director of operations for Jones Pharmacies in Spokane and Deer Park. Working with Mr. Evans will afford the resident the opportunity to become knowledgeable about the business aspects of owning or managing a community pharmacy.

Linda Garrelts MacLean is the former owner of Jones Pharmacies located in Spokane and Deer Park. She is active in many state and national pharmacy organizations and has served as president of the Washington State Pharmacists Association. Linda has always been and continues to be a pioneer in the pharmacy profession and was voted the “Most Influential Woman Pharmacist,” in 1997, in The Pharmacy Times. Linda currently is an Assistant Professor of Pharmacotherapy at WSU College of Pharmacy. She received the College's 2003 Outstanding Pharmacy Alumnus award.

Catrina Schwartz graduated from the University of Washington Pharmacy School in 2002. She then completed a community pharmacy residency at Jones Pharmacy from 2002-2003. During the residency, she implemented a rapid strep throat testing protocol with prescriptive authority. Jones Pharmacy is the first pharmacy in Washington State to offer this service. In addition, Catrina assisted with teaching EWU and WSU students at the Riverpoint campus. She currently staffs at Jones Pharmacy and Shriners Hospitals for Children.
