Community Pharmacy Residency
at Medicine Ladies Inc., Seattle

Medicine Ladies, Inc. is an independently owned corporation operating four pharmacies in Seattle. The pharmacies include a traditional neighborhood pharmacy, one located in a small medical clinic with a pediatrics specialty, one located in a senior residential community, and one located inside a skilled nursing facility. Within the corporation, pharmacists offer a wide range of pharmacist care services including immunizations, cholesterol monitoring, blood pressure monitoring, body fat composition measurement, anticoagulation monitoring, bone density screening, compounding, emergency contraception, nursing home consulting and custom medication packaging. New services are added regularly. A quarterly newspaper highlighting the pharmacist services is written and published in-house and distributed to over 16,000 households.

The resident will engage in clinical activities and be encouraged to develop and hone management and marketing skills, and help evaluate new business opportunities. The wide variety of experiences available within the four pharmacies will provide the resident the latitude to tailor the residency to suit his/her needs, while emphasizing core competencies in direct patient care, communication and practice-based research.

The principal preceptor is Holly Whitcomb Henry, co-owner of Medicine Ladies, Inc. She is a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist, and earned a Specialty Certificate in Geriatric Pharmacy Practice from the University of Washington School of Pharmacy. She holds Affiliate Faculty Appointments at both WSU and UW Pharmacy Schools. Holly is a recognized leader in the pharmacy community, having served as President of the Washington State Pharmacists Association. She is currently the President of the National Community Pharmacists Association, and serves on the Board of the NCPAPAC. She and her business partner received the Innovative Practice Award, and Holly was chosen one of the Top 50 Most Influential Pharmacists in 1999 by American Druggist magazine. She received the Preceptor of the Year Award from WSU and was named their Outstanding Pharmacy Alumnus in 1999.
