WSU Doctor of Pharmacy - Why Yakima?

Being in Yakima gives student pharmacists interested in working with rural and underserved populations an ideal learning environment. Read more on our curriculum.

Class sizes are kept small at 25 to 50 students, offering a more personal learning experience.

Yakima students have the same access to scholarships and financial aid and pay the same tuition as those in Spokane.

The admissions process for students located in Yakima is the same as those who apply to attend Spokane. Students will have the opportunity to choose their preferred location when the application period opens.

The difference from Spokane

  • Student pharmacists in Yakima will have the option to be there all four years, including most of the rotations in the fourth year. Students choose between several geographical locations in the state to do most of their final year rotations.
  • Yakima offers the benefits of a small cohort, learning side-by-side with medical students in an environment that prepares practitioners to care for patients as part of an interprofessional health care team.

Our history in Yakima

The College of Pharmacy established a presence in Yakima in the 1990s, with both faculty and students. WSU pharmacy faculty work as pharmacists at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital and supervise student pharmacists who obtain practice experience there.

Yakima has long been a practice site for WSU Doctor of Pharmacy students completing their fourth-year Advanced Pharmacy Practice rotations (APPE). The last year of pharmacy school is dedicated to six rotations, much like the way medical students complete clerkships in their third and fourth years of medical school.

In addition, Yakima is a location for Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPE) that student pharmacists begin after their first year.

The College has practicing pharmacists in Yakima who are trained and certified as preceptors to supervise student pharmacists during pharmacy practice rotations at multiple local practice sites. Students gain a variety of hands on pharmacy practice experiences during their professional education including rotations within a variety of settings: hospital, clinic based, community, and ambulatory pharmacy.
